Hui Cai, Senior Scientist, Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development, L.L.C.

Dr. Hui Cai received her B.S. and M.S. from Peking University, and Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1999 from The Scripps Research Institute, where she worked under the guidance of Professor Dale Boger. She then joined Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development, L.L.C. in San Diego, working on small molecule drug discovery programs targeting immune mediated inflammatory diseases. She is a co-author and co-inventor to over thirty scientific publications and issued or pending patents.

Dr. Cai is a commissioner at City of San Diego Science and Technology Commission. She also serves as a board member of Sino-American Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Professionals Association (SABPA), the American Chemical Society San Diego Section (ACS San Diego), and was former President of San Diego Chinese Association (SDCA).

Dr. Cai is attending the Rady School of Management of UC San Diego as a DLA Piper - Athena FlexMBA Scholar, and expects to receive her MBA in summer 2007.

Sui Xiong Cai, Senior Director, EpiCept Corporation.

Sui Xiong Cai, Ph. D. is Senior Director of Chemistry of EpiCept Corporation. Prior to the merger of Maxim pharmaceuticals with EpiCept, Dr. Cai was Senior Director of Chemistry of Maxim. Dr. Cai was Director of Chemistry and then Senior Director of Chemistry of Cytovia and joined Maxim when Cytovia was acquired. Prior to joining Cytovia, a company spun off from CoCensys, Dr. Cai was Associate Director of Chemistry at CoCensys. He was one of the early employees of Acea and moved to CoCensys after Acea was acquired. Dr. Cai has extensive experience in drug research and discovery, including inducers of apoptosis as anti-cancer agents; inhibitors of caspases for the treatment of CNS, MCI and other degenerative diseases; inhibitors of SARS coronavirus proteases for the treatment of SARS; antagonists and modulators of glutamate receptors, include Glycine/NMDA receptors, NMDA subtype receptors and AMPA receptors, for the treatment of CNS diseases; voltage dependent Na channel blockers for the treatment of CNS diseases; as well as novel fluorescent dyes and substrates for the development of HTS assays. Dr. Cai also has expertise in the management of company patent portfolio and intellectual property, and is on the Editorial Board for Recent Patents on Anti -Cancer Drug Discovery. Dr. Cai is the co-inventor of over 60 issued US patents and has published more than 70 peer-reviewed papers. Dr. Cai earned his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Oregon and his B.S. in chemistry from the University of Science and Technology of China.

Chao Dou, Associate Director of Diazyme Laboratories, a Division of General Atomics

Dr. Chao Dou is currently the associate director of Diazyme Laboratories, a division of General Atomics. At General Atomics, his effort has been dedicated to the development of clinical chemistry reagents for enzymatic detection of cardiac markers, diabetes, electrolytes and others with automated biochemistry analyzers. Prior to that, he served as an R&D manager at Apogent Technologies and senior research scientist at Roche Diagnostics. During his tenure at both companies, he successfully developed a dozen of commercial immunoassays for drug testing. He has brought more than a dozen of FDA 510 approval products to the US market and CE Marking products to the European market. He has published more than 20 papers in the peer-reviewed scientific journals and 4 patent applications.

He obtained his B.S. and M.S. in Chemistry from Nankai University in 1987 and 1990 respectively. After that he was admitted by Peking University as a Ph.D. candidate. In 1993, he came to the University of California at San Diego and obtained his Ph.D. of Biochemistry in1997.

Hui Li, Principle Scientist, Pfizer Global Research & Development; President, Sino-American Biotech & Pharmaceutical Association (SABPA)

Dr. Li is currently principle scientist and project leader at Pfizer Global Research & Development, La Jolla Laboratories. His research interests include structure-based drug design, discovery and development of novel therapeutics in the field of anti-viral, diabetes and ophthalmology. He has worked on the Hepatitis C virus (HCV) program, leading and contributing to the identification and optimization of inhibitors of HCV RNA dependant RNA polymerase, an important target for the development of novel anti-HCV therapeutics.

Dr. Li obtained his B.S degree from Peking University and Ph.D in organic chemistry from University of California, San Diego. There he worked under the guidance of Professor K. C. Nicolaou on new synthetic technology development and the total synthesis of glycopeptide antibiotic Vancomycin. Dr. Li is a founding member of the Sino-American Biotech & Pharmaceutical Association (SABPA) and is currently serving as President and Board of Directors.

Hua Jin, Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, University of California, San Diego

Dr. Jin is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and medical director of MCCE program in the division of geropsychiatry. Dr. Jin received his medical degree from Shanghai Medical University and completed his psychiatry residency both at Shanghai Mental Health Center and in the department of psychiatry at UCSD. He has been on the faculty of the UCSD Department of Psychiatry since graduated from his residency training in 2001.

Dr. Jin has extensive experience in psychiatry research and his current research focuses on weight gain, diabetes and hyperlipidemia associated with atypical antipsychotics as well as the underlining mechanisms related to these metabolic changes in schizophrenia. He has been collaborating with the China CDC and Mental Health Center at Peking University and conducting a NIH funded large scale HIV/AIDS neurocognitive and neuropsychiatry research in China.

Dr. Jin’s clinical work is focused on psychosis, schizophrenia and medication management. He has been the PI for several clinical trials on antipsychotics in the US and China. He is a staff psychiatrist at VA San Diego Healthcare System. Dr. Jin also teaches and supervises psychiatry residents and geropsychiatric fellows rotating through the geropsychiatry.

Ping Ling, Senior Scientist, Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development, L.L.C.

Dr. Ping Ling is currently a senior research scientist in Johnson & Johnson PRD. Ping obtained her B.S. in Biochemistry from Peking Normal University in 1982 and her M.S in the same major from Tianjing Medical University in 1985. In 1986, she came to the United States to pursue her advanced education in US Academy Member Professor Roberts’s lab at University of Missouri. After acquiring a Ph.D. in 1992, She began her career in the pharmaceutical industry through three years Post-Doctoral training at Hoffman-La-Roche in NJ and then joined Johnson & Johnson PRD La Jolla in 1996. Ping developed extensive experience in drug discovery and involved in more than 10 projects targeting diseases in immune system. She is an author of over 20 publications and an inventor of 6 patents.

Jane Moores, Director, Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property Services, UCSD.

Jane holds B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in microbiology from University College, London. She performed post-doctoral research at UCSD in the Chemistry Department, where she was involved in cloning bacterial genes, and in the School of Medicine, where she helped to develop retroviral vectors for gene therapy.

After completing her postdoctoral fellowships, Jane spent several years at Stratagene working as a bench scientist, as liaison between engineers and biologists and in various aspects of business development.

Jane joined the UCSD TechTIPS office at the end of 1999 and has focused on licensing inventions in the life science and biomedical arena with occasional forays into engineering. In January 2007, Jane was appointed Interim Director of TechTIPS.

Feng Tian, Scientific Investigator, Metabasis Therapeutics, Inc.

Dr. Feng Tian is a Scientific Investigator in Metabasis Therapeutics, Inc. where he focuses on the discovery of novel small molecule drugs targeting liver diseases and metabolic diseases such as hyperlipidemia, liver fibrosis, and diabetes.  After obtaining his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Peking University, he went to Michigan State University and received his Ph.D. degree in Organic Chemistry. He completed his postdoctral research at the Scripps Research Institute .

Xiaojun Wu, CPA, SAIC.

Xiaojun Wu is a licensed CPA and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountant. She currently serves as Vice President and Internal Audit Manager of SAIC. Her responsibility includes planning, managing and conducting Sarbanes-Oxley 404 compliance audits and financial audits. She received master degree of Professional Accountancy from Jackson State University. She is currently volunteering as the Treasurer of the San Diego Chinese Association.
